Dr. Clarence Macartney was an expert of history and knowledge concerning Napoleon Bonaparte and wrote a stunning biography concerning him. He found that the two most renowned people in history…the ones most quoted…the ones most written about were Napoleon Bonaparte and Jesus Christ. With that finding, Dr. Macartney set out to write a book telling the differences between the two that was called “What Jesus Really Taught”. This is one of the excerpts from that book:

The two characters of history about whom more books have been written and more words spoken than all others are Napoleon Bonaparte and Jesus Christ. But what a contrast between these two men who…more than all others…have engrossed the mind of man! Napoleon shed rivers of blood upon which to float his ambitions…yet the only blood ever shed by Jesus was His own…which He poured out upon the cross for the redemption of mankind!

Dr. Macartney goes on to tell how Napoleon left behind a ghastly trail of death and dying…While Jesus, on the other hand, left behind a trail of mercy, compassion, life and love!

For ages men have wanted to know the strategies of this famous emperor Napoleon…studying his tactics, his values…his ideas. Yet listen to this testimony attributed to Napoleon himself:

I know men, and I tell you, Jesus is not a man. He commands us to believe and gives no other reason but His powerful words: I am God! Philosophers try to solve the mysteries of the universe by their empty dissertations: Fools! They are like an infant that cries because he wants the moon as a play thing. Christ never hesitates. He speaks with authority. His religion is a mystery but it subsists by its own force. He seeks and absolutely requires the love of men…the most difficult thing in the world to claim. Alexander the Great, Caesar, Hannibal…they conquered the world but they had no friends…I founded my empire on what? Force! Jesus founded His Empire on love: and at this very hour millions would die for Him! What an abyss between my misery and the eternal kingdom of Christ, who is proclaimed, loved, adored and which is extending all over the earth. (Regarding the question: Is Jesus dead Napoleon asks) Is this death? I tell you…the death of Christ is the death of God!  (And God is not dead)  I tell you…Jesus is God!

What a difference between the two…one being totally given over to the driving force of ambition and self exaltation…leaving behind a trail of death murder and bloodshed…while the other…Jesus…sought no recognition for Himself…exalted and lifted up the name of His Heavenly Father…differed to the thoughts, goals and desires of His Father…continuously laid aside all aspects of physical and personal comforts for the sake of others…commanded those that asked to follow Him to do all things in love…forgiving all for everything…leaving behind a legacy of life, peace, joy, faith, confidence, surety…and then crowned it all with His gift of eternal life…all for the cost of love!
